Many dermatological and cosmetic skin conditions can be improved with fractional laser resurfacing. Our main focus is skin texture and wrinkle reduction. We utilize fractional technology – the laser energy only treats a fraction of the treatment area while preserving portions of healthy tissue surrounding the treatment zone. Because some healthy tissue remains, it decreases the downtime and improves the clinical outcome. These areas can be either “non-ablative” (the laser beams coagulate the affected tissue) or “ablative” (the laser beams vaporize the affected tissue).
By utilizing the Palomar 2940 Erbium Laser, we can achieve significant clinical improvement. The Palomar 2940 provides a very aggressive treatment for wrinkle reduction and skin rejuvenation. The ablative laser treatment removes a heated column of skin tissue and provides more substantial wrinkle removal and superficial skin tightening than the non ablative fractional lasers. There is some downtime (redness, skin flaking for 7-10 days) associated with an ablative fractional laser treatment but patients can expect excellent outcomes after a single treatment.
Is your schedule too chaotic for downtime? Then the non-ablative fractional treatment may be right for you – it is an an excellent alternative for removing wrinkles, improving skin texture, shrinking pores, and decreasing the appearance of acne scars. The laser heats the skin without ablating it; the Palomar 1540 utilizes an Erbium laser to heat small columns of the deep skin layers to encourage new collagen production. Because it is less aggressive than the Ablative laser treatments, patients will require multiple treatments in order to achieve optimal results. Most patients experience mild swelling and redness which typically subside within 24-48 hours.
What is the difference between Ablative and NonAblative Laser Treatments?
|Minimal downtime||Typically 7-10 days of downtime|
|Minimized redness and swelling||Consistent long-term results|
|Multiple treatments required||One treatment needed|
